Exabyte Mammoth 20/40 GB cartridge

The Exabyte 312629 is a Mammoth data cartridge offering 20 GB native and 40 GB compressed capacity. It uses Advanced Metal Evaporated coating on 8 mm tape for archival storage. The cartridge is compatible only with Mammoth drives such as the M2, 8900 and LT series. It suits organisations that rely on helical-scan tape workflows.

Helical-scan media with AME coating

The 170 m tape length and 0.31 in width run on helical-scan mechanisms designed for Mammoth drives. Anti-static coating reduces particulate contamination during normal operation. Power draw and acoustic profile are determined entirely by the host drive, not the cartridge itself. No active cooling or electrical connections are present on the media.

Single cartridge for Mammoth libraries

One cartridge fits directly into any Mammoth-compatible drive or autoloader without adapters. The 0.315 in form factor matches the standard Mammoth slot, freeing no additional bays or slots beyond the drive itself. Buyers who need higher native capacity or non-Mammoth formats cannot use this media.

Questions about this item

How is the 8mm AME cartridge loaded into a Mammoth drive, and what step is often missed?

Insert the cartridge until it clicks; the drive then threads the 170 m tape automatically — skipping the click leaves the leader unseated.

What maintenance will the Advanced Metal Evaporated tape need over time?

Clean the drive heads with approved cleaning cartridges after every 20–40 GB of data written to prevent oxide buildup on the AME coating.

What limit appears first during continuous streaming to the 312629 cartridge?

The 170 m tape length caps native capacity at 20 GB; sustained writes beyond that require compression to reach the 40 GB mark.
