5.25" SATA DVD Enclosure with USB 3.0 Hub

This aluminium enclosure converts a 5.25" SATA optical drive into an external USB 3.0 device while adding three extra USB Type-A ports. It accepts any Blu-ray, CD or DVD drive up to 171 mm deep and works without driver installation. The unit is aimed at users who still need optical media access on modern systems that lack internal 5.25" bays.

USB 3.0 Interface Limits

The enclosure connects through a single USB 3.0 link rated at 5 Gbps, so sustained throughput cannot exceed that ceiling. Optical drives themselves top out at 24x for DVD and 8x for CD, which is well within the bus bandwidth. Only SATA protocol drives are supported; IDE or PATA mechanisms will not function in this chassis.

Drive Depth Compatibility

The critical specification is the 171 mm maximum drive depth; any SATA optical unit longer than this will not fit. Drives without side mounting screws can still be used, but the physical length limit is absolute. Builders with deeper specialty drives must choose a different enclosure.
