What the PT-A02 is and who it serves

The Fellowes PT-A02 is an external CD and DVD drive that connects through USB 3.0 and USB-C. It reads and writes both CD and DVD media for laptops, desktops and all-in-one computers running Windows, Linux or Mac OS. Buyers who need Blu-ray support or want to use the drive with a TV, car, tablet, smartphone, Chromebook or projector cannot use this model.

Sustained transfer behaviour

The drive reaches a maximum DVD read and write speed of 8x and a maximum CD rewrite speed of 24x. The USB 3.0 interface provides a theoretical ceiling of 5Gbps, yet real-world sustained throughput settles between 350 and 450 MB per second. Error correction helps keep data intact during long read or write sessions.

Installation experience and common issues

Setup is plug-and-play with no driver installation required on supported operating systems. The embedded cable slot stores the dual USB-A and USB-C lead neatly. For desktop PCs the supplier advises using a rear USB port to ensure reliable power and playback. Region-code limits on commercial discs may prevent playback in some regions.

Questions about this item

How loud or hot does the Fellowes PT-A02 get when burning discs for hours?

The drive uses a lightweight, portable design with stabilised movement for quiet operation during extended read or write sessions at 8X DVD and 24X CD speeds.

Does the PT-A02 need an extra power adapter or cable to work with my laptop?

No, it draws power directly through its built-in dual USB-A and USB-C cable, delivering up to 5Gbps transfer without any separate adapter.

Will this drive work reliably on an older desktop that only has USB 2.0 ports?

Yes, the USB 3.0 interface is backward compatible with USB 2.0, so it will function on older systems, though transfer rates will be limited to the slower port speed.
