It lets you attach a flash drive, a USB 2.0 card reader or a keyboard directly to the phone. An auxiliary power lead supplies extra current for bus-powered peripherals such as portable hard disks.

USB 2.0 speed and power delivery limits

The cable operates at USB 2.0 signalling rates, so bulk endpoints top out at the standard high-speed throughput. The supplementary power connector draws from an external source such as a charger or power bank; it cannot charge the host phone and it does not increase the port’s own current limit. Devices that exceed the port’s available power will not enumerate unless the extra lead is connected.
