Tests ground fault breakers by overloading 110-125V circuits to identify seven wiring conditions with yellow and red indicator lights
This Gardner Bender GFCI outlet tester plugs into any 110-125 volt AC ground fault receptacle to verify wiring safety. It is designed for electricians, maintenance technicians and homeowners who need to confirm that GFCI protection is functioning correctly. The tool checks seven distinct fault conditions including open ground, open neutral, open hot and reversed wiring. Yellow and red indicator lights identify the specific fault or confirm correct wiring.
The tester operates only on standard 110-125 volt AC ground fault receptacles and cannot be used on higher-voltage circuits or non-GFCI outlets without an adapter. It draws power directly from the receptacle under test, so no battery is required. The black test button deliberately overloads the circuit to trip the GFCI breaker, which means the device will interrupt power on a functioning circuit. Results are shown through the built-in light array; there is no digital display or data output.
The critical specification is the 110-125 volt AC rating combined with the ability to trip a GFCI breaker via the test button. If the installation uses a different voltage range or lacks ground fault receptacles, this tester will not work. Model 3501 covers the seven most common wiring faults in North American residential and light-commercial circuits, making it the right choice when a simple pass-or-fail indication on live GFCI outlets is required.

Yes, the tester is rated for 110-125 volt AC receptacles, matching typical North American household wiring.
Pressing the button overloads the circuit to trip the GFCI; the yellow and red lights then indicate correct wiring, open ground, open neutral, open hot, hot/ground reverse or hot/neutral reverse.
The unit plugs directly into any ground-fault receptacle rated 110-125 volt AC, so it fits the common outlets found in kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor locations.
