OEM GPS receiver for automotive and fleet use

The Garmin GPS 18x PC is an OEM high-sensitivity receiver built for automotive, fleet vehicle and electronics applications that need a small, highly accurate positioning module. It includes an integrated magnetic base for quick mounting on metal surfaces. The puck-shaped unit measures 2.4 inches in diameter and weighs only a few ounces, making it suitable for installations where space is at a premium. Condition is new.

Sustained tracking with WAAS and 12-channel

The receiver uses a 12-parallel-channel design with WAAS SBAS support to maintain a stable fix during extended operation. High sensitivity allows it to acquire and hold satellites in challenging environments such as urban canyons or heavy foliage. Continuous data output is provided in industry-standard NMEA 0183 format or proprietary Garmin format for integration with navigation software. No external antenna is required.

DB-9 serial connector

Connectivity is handled through a DB-9 pin serial connector paired with a 12-volt cigarette lighter power adapter for vehicle electrical systems. This interface determines compatibility with legacy PC serial ports or USB-to-serial converters used in fleet and telematics hardware. Buyers who need USB-native, Bluetooth or Ethernet connectivity should look elsewhere. The single specification that decides fit is the DB-9 serial interface.

Questions about this item

How much power does the GPS 18x PC draw when it runs continuously from a vehicle's 12-volt supply?

The unit connects to a 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter, drawing its operating power directly from the vehicle's electrical system without a separate supply.

What must the host computer provide to receive data from the DB-9 serial connector on this receiver?

The computer needs a DB-9 serial port or a USB-to-serial adapter and software that can read NMEA 0183 or Garmin proprietary sentences.

Will the magnetic base of this 2.4-inch puck hold securely on the roof of an older fleet vehicle?

The integrated magnetic base is designed for automotive roof mounting and holds the 2.4-inch diameter receiver in place on steel surfaces.
