Handheld GPS for hiking and cycling

The Garmin eTrex 22x is a rugged handheld navigator built for outdoor use. It fits hikers, cyclists and campers who need reliable position fixes away from mobile coverage. A 2.2" colour screen with 240 x 320 pixels stays readable in direct sunlight. The unit comes preloaded with TopoActive maps that include routable roads and trails.

Dual-satellite tracking over long days

GPS and GLONASS reception work together to hold a signal in valleys, forests and steep terrain where a single system can drop out. The receiver maintains tracking continuously rather than only in short bursts. Power comes from two AA cells, delivering up to 25 hours of operation in GPS mode so the device lasts through multi-day trips without recharging.

Upgrade from phone-only navigation

This unit replaces reliance on a smartphone for backcountry routing, removing the fragility, battery drain and signal dependence of a mobile device. The jump is worth it when you travel beyond cellular range, need a display that works in bright sun, or want a dedicated device that survives rain, dust and drops. Internal storage of 8 GB plus a micro SD slot holds extra maps for extended regions.

Questions about this item

How much heat does the 2.2" display generate during a 25-hour hike?

The eTrex 22x runs on 2 AA batteries and has no active cooling, so it stays cool to the touch even after a full day of use.

What must I already own to start navigating with the 240 x 320 screen?

You only need 2 AA batteries; the TopoActive maps are preloaded and the 8 GB internal memory is ready for extra maps.

Will the GPS and GLONASS receiver work with my older paper topographic maps?

Yes — you can mark waypoints on the device and cross-reference them with paper maps using the same coordinate grid.
