Three-Piece Tap Kit

This three-piece tap kit provides bottoming, plug and taper taps for cutting #3-48 UNC threads. The high-speed steel cutters carry a TiN coating for wear resistance and a right-hand thread direction. Each tap has three flutes and an overall length of 1 13/16 in with a 1/2 in thread length. The set targets mechanics and fabricators who need to produce Class 2B internal threads in metal components.

Installation Notes

Start the hole with the taper tap, advance with the plug tap and finish with the bottoming tap to reach full depth. Use a 2.00 mm drill to produce the recommended 75 percent thread engagement before tapping. Apply cutting fluid and reverse the tap frequently to break chips, especially in deeper holes. Misalignment or skipping the drill size often leads to oversize threads or broken flutes.

Practical Limits

The H2 thread limit and Class 2B fit define the tolerance window for the finished internal thread. The 1/2 in thread length caps the maximum depth you can cut in a single pass. High-speed steel with TiN coating suits general-purpose steel and non-ferrous alloys but wears faster in hardened or abrasive materials. The #3-48 size restricts use to very small fasteners, so the kit does not serve larger threading tasks.
