M3.5 x 0.6 metric straight-flute plug tap in TiN-coated high-speed steel, 50.8 mm overall with 17.46 mm thread length for 75 % thread depth using a 2.90 mm drill
This straight flute hand tap cuts metric threads with a 3.5 mm major diameter and 0.6 mm pitch. It is designed for general-purpose threading in maintenance and light production environments. The plug chamfer suits through holes and blind holes with adequate clearance. Right-hand cutting direction matches standard fastener conventions.
The tap body is high-speed steel coated with titanium nitride for improved wear resistance. TiN reduces friction during cutting, which helps manage heat and extends tool life in normal use. A 75 percent thread depth and 2.90 mm drill size are specified for the prepared hole. Class of fit 2B and thread limit D4 define the tolerance band.
Under continuous use the TiN coating maintains lower cutting temperatures compared with uncoated taps. The straight flute geometry evacuates chips in short bursts, so periodic reversal is needed to prevent packing in deep holes. Overall length of 50.8 mm and thread length of 17.46 mm limit reach in confined workpieces.

Secure the tap squarely in the chuck, apply cutting fluid, and start the hole with the 2.90 mm drill size for 75 percent thread engagement; the step often missed is verifying the drill size before tapping.
The high-speed steel cutting edges with TiN coating will gradually dull; replace the tap when threads show tear-out or when torque rises noticeably during the 17.46 mm thread length cut.
Heat buildup in the high-speed steel body during repeated 50.8 mm overall-length cuts reduces edge hardness, so cutting speed must be lowered before the TiN coating degrades.
