500 GB desktop hard drive

The HGST Deskstar 7K1000.D is a 500 GB 3.5-inch internal hard drive built for desktop PCs that need reliable bulk storage. It runs at 7200 RPM with a 32 MB cache and connects over a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface. The single-platter design keeps the drive simple and compatible with standard desktop bays.

Low power draw and quiet operation

Advanced Format 4096-byte sectors improve error correction while eighth-generation power management cuts idle consumption by up to 16% over the previous model. HiVERT technology borrowed from 2.5-inch notebook drives further reduces heat and acoustic output during everyday use. The bare-drive package fits any 3.5-inch mounting point.

Upgrade from smaller or slower mechanical drives

This model replaces older 512-byte sector drives or lower-capacity 7200 RPM units where a single 500 GB platter simplifies the storage layout. The jump is worth it when a system needs more space without adding a second drive or moving to solid-state media. Builders who need higher capacities or faster random access should consider other storage types.

Questions about this item

How do I install this 3.5" SATA 6.0Gb/s drive and what step is often missed?

Mount the drive in a 3.5" bay, connect the SATA data cable to a 6.0Gb/s port and attach the SATA power connector; the step often missed is ensuring the motherboard SATA controller is set to AHCI mode in BIOS for full 6.0Gb/s performance.

What maintenance or replacement will this 500GB 7200 RPM drive need later?

No scheduled maintenance is required; the drive has a 32MB cache and 7200 RPM spindle. Under normal desktop use it runs until the mechanism wears out, at which point the entire bare drive is replaced.

What limit appears first on this Deskstar 7K1000.D during sustained heavy writes?

The 7200 RPM mechanical throughput and 32MB cache become the bottleneck first; sustained transfer rates are capped by the physical platter speed and cache size rather than the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface.
