A 6 TB, 7200 RPM enterprise drive with a 128 MB cache and SAS 12Gb/s interface, built on a helium-sealed platform for high-capacity server storage
This HGST Ultrastar He8 drive delivers 6TB of storage over a SAS 12Gb/s interface. It spins at 7200 RPM with a 128MB cache and uses a helium-sealed 3.5-inch form factor. The bare drive is designed for enterprise environments where capacity density and power efficiency are priorities. Average seek time is 8.5ms and average latency is 4.16ms.
It suits operators running cloud storage, massive scale-out data centres or distributed file systems such as Ceph and Hadoop. The helium platform provides 33% more capacity and 44% better power efficiency per terabyte than 6TB air drives. Buyers who need a SATA-only interface or a 512e format without SED options should look at something else.
The single specification that decides fit is the SAS 12Gb/s interface, which provides compatibility with next-generation data centre controllers. Systems limited to SATA 6Gb/s cannot use this drive at its rated speed. Secure erase and Self-Encrypting Drive options are available on this model.

The SAS 12Gb/s interface supports up to 12 Gbit/s raw throughput; real-world sustained transfer is limited by the 7200 RPM platters and 128 MB cache.
The drive fits a standard 3.5-inch bay at 147 mm length, 101.6 mm width and 26.1 mm height.
Slide the bare drive into a 3.5-inch hot-swap tray, secure it with the tray screws, then insert the tray until the SAS connector seats firmly; the step often missed is fully engaging the tray latch so the dual-port SAS connector makes reliable contact.
