Ideal desktop storage upgrade

This new HGST internal hard drive delivers 500GB of capacity in a standard 3.5 inch form factor. It spins at 7200RPM with a 16MB buffer and connects through a SATA 3Gb/s interface. The unit weighs 2.0 pound and is ready for installation in compatible desktop systems.

Suits capacity-focused desktop builds

The drive fits users who need affordable bulk storage for documents, media libraries or backup archives on a SATA platform. Builders requiring faster access times, larger caches or higher interface bandwidth should look at alternative storage technologies instead.

SATA 3Gb/s interface speed

The 3Gb/s link rate is the specification that determines whether this drive matches your motherboard or controller capabilities. Systems limited to slower SATA revisions will operate at the lower negotiated speed.

Questions about this item

What does 7200 RPM mean for daily use on this HGST HCS721050CLA362?

The 7200 RPM spindle speed gives faster data access than slower desktop drives, reducing load times for the operating system and applications stored on the 500GB platters.

What does the SATA 3Gb/s interface mean for throughput on this HCS721050CLA362?

The SATA 3Gb/s connection sets the link speed for this 3.5 inch drive; actual sustained transfer will be limited by the 7200 RPM mechanism and 16MB cache rather than the interface ceiling.

What mounting space does this 3.5 inch HGST drive need inside a PC case?

The drive fits a standard 3.5 inch internal bay and uses the regular SATA data and power connectors found on desktop motherboards and power supplies.
