320 GB 2.5" SATA 7200 RPM drive

This HGST Travelstar Z7K320 is a 2.5-inch internal hard drive with 320 GB capacity. It spins at 7200 RPM and connects through a SATA 3 Gb/s interface. A 16 MB buffer helps sustain throughput for everyday workloads. The drive is supplied new and weighs 1.0 pound.

Suits notebook upgrades and compact desktops

Builders refreshing a laptop or a small-form-factor PC that accepts a 2.5-inch SATA drive will find the 7200 RPM speed and 16 MB cache a direct fit. TrueTrack technology adds shock and vibration tolerance for mobile use. Systems that need a 6 Gb/s SATA link cannot use this unit. Buyers who want more storage or a solid-state interface should look elsewhere.

SATA 3 Gb/s interface decides fit

The drive communicates over SATA at 3 Gb/s, so the host must provide a matching SATA port. A 6 Gb/s-only controller will not work with this device. Verify the motherboard or laptop specification for 3 Gb/s SATA support before purchasing. The 2.5-inch form factor and 7200 RPM speed are secondary to this interface requirement.

Questions about this item

How much heat and noise does the 7200RPM spindle produce during continuous operation?

The 7200RPM spindle increases both heat output and acoustic levels compared with slower drives; a laptop chassis with active cooling is recommended for sustained workloads.

What host interface and physical bay does the HTS723232A7A364 require?

The drive uses a 2.5" SATA 3Gb/s connector and fits any standard 2.5-inch SATA bay or caddy in a notebook or desktop.

Will the 16MB cache and 3Gb/s SATA link work with an older SATA 1.5Gb/s controller?

Yes, the SATA interface is backward compatible; the drive will negotiate 1.5Gb/s speed and the 16MB cache remains fully functional on legacy controllers.
