Enterprise 4 TB SAS Drive

The HGST X477A-R6 is a 4 TB 3.5 inch internal hard drive spinning at 7200 rpm with a SAS interface and 128 MB cache. It is built for servers and storage arrays that require hot-plug and hot-swap capability. The Ultrastar product line targets environments where continuous uptime and high-capacity bulk storage are priorities.

Thermal and Power Profile

At 7200 rpm the drive generates typical enterprise-level heat and acoustic output for a 3.5 inch SAS disk. Power draw scales with the rotational speed and SAS signalling during sustained read or write workloads. Hot-swap support allows replacement without powering down the enclosure, reducing thermal disruption to neighbouring drives.

Build Integration

The 3.5 inch form factor fits standard SAS drive bays in compatible NetApp DS4243, DS4246 and FAS2240 systems. A SAS backplane or controller with hot-plug support is required to use the removable carrier feature. The drive adds 4 TB of raw capacity without occupying additional slots beyond a single bay.

Questions about this item

How do I install the X477A-R6 in a DS4243 or DS4246 shelf, and which step is often missed?

Slide the 3.5 in drive into an empty bay until the SAS connector seats firmly; the step often missed is waiting for the shelf firmware to recognise the new 4 TB Ultrastar before adding it to an aggregate.

What maintenance or replacement will the X477A-R6 need after extended use?

The 7200 rpm mechanical drive will eventually require replacement when SMART attributes indicate wear; no user-serviceable parts exist inside the sealed helium enclosure.

What limit appears first on the X477A-R6 during sustained write workloads?

The 128 MB cache absorbs bursts, but the 7.2 K rotational speed caps sustained sequential throughput once the buffer fills.
