Low-profile PCIe 2.0 x4 card adds four SATA 6.0Gb/s ports with RAID 0/1/5/10 JBOD support
The RocketRAID 642L is a low-profile PCIe 2.0 x4 host adapter that adds four SATA 6.0Gb/s ports to a PC or Mac. Two connectors are internal and two are external eSATA, so drives can sit inside the chassis or in an external enclosure. The onboard Marvell 88SE9235 controller handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and JBOD without using host CPU cycles. A port-multiplier function lets the card address up to 20 SATA devices in total.
This card suits integrators maintaining Windows Server 2003, 2007 or 2008, Windows Vista, 7 or 8, Mac OS X 10.5 or major Linux and FreeBSD releases. It is not for builders who need driver support for current Windows Server or macOS versions, nor for systems that lack a PCIe 2.0 x4 slot. Users wanting more than four native SATA connections or hardware RAID 6 will also need a different solution.
The single specification that decides fit is the port count: two internal SATA and two external eSATA connectors, each running at up to 6.0Gb/s. If the build requires exactly four native 6Gb/s links and the operating system is listed in the supported matrix, the 642L matches; otherwise the port count or OS support will be the limiting factor.

The card uses a low-profile form factor measuring 2.6 inches by 3.1 inches and includes a low-profile bracket in the package for direct installation.
Install the driver from the included software CD before connecting any drives; the step often missed is loading the driver during OS setup so the RAID volumes are visible immediately.
The Marvell 88SE9235 controller supports port multiplier expansion up to 20 SATA devices across the four 6.0Gb/s ports.
