320 GB 2.5" SATA hard drive

The HGST Travelstar Z5K320 is a 320 GB internal hard drive in a 2.5 inch form factor. It spins at 5400 RPM with an 8 MB buffer and uses the SATA interface. The 7 mm height suits thin notebooks and gaming consoles.

Near silent operation and low power

Marketing information highlights best-of-breed acoustics for near silent operation in normal use. The 5400 RPM spindle speed and single-platter design help keep heat and power draw modest for mobile devices. No active cooling is required.

Direct replacement for 9.5 mm drives

The 320 GB per platter one-disk models are designed as a direct replacement for standard 9.5 mm HDDs in notebooks and consoles. The thinner 7 mm profile also accommodates newer slim device designs. Buyers needing higher capacity or faster spindle speeds should consider other options.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 7 mm high 2.5" SATA drive in a laptop bay made for 9.5 mm drives, and what step is often missed?

Use the included spacer or bracket to fill the extra 2.5 mm gap; the step most people miss is securing the spacer screws before sliding the drive into the SATA connector.

What maintenance or replacement will the 5400 RPM 320 GB drive need later?

No routine maintenance is required; the drive should be replaced if SMART data reports reallocated sectors or if mechanical noise increases beyond the rated near-silent acoustics.

What limit appears first during sustained transfers on the SATA/300 interface?

The 5400 RPM spindle speed caps sustained throughput well below the 300 MB/s interface ceiling, so mechanical throughput is the first bottleneck.
