Enclosure for indoor electrical wiring

The HOFFMAN ASE8X8X8 is a carbon-steel enclosure rated NEMA Type 1 and IP30 for indoor electrical wiring. It measures 8 inches high, 8 inches wide and 8 inches deep with a solid screw-on cover secured by captive screws. The grey powder-coated finish resists corrosion and the unit carries cUL listing per CSA C22.2 No 40, UL 50 and 50E, and IEC 60529 compliance. Wall-mounting holes are provided for secure installation.

Build quality and daily mounting implications

Constructed from 12/14/16 gauge carbon steel, the box offers rigid protection for wireways and components in dry indoor locations. Captive screws on the screw-latch cover prevent lost hardware during routine access and the solid cover maintains the IP30 rating against solid objects. Powder coating adds durability in typical commercial or light-industrial environments. The integral mounting holes allow direct attachment to flat surfaces without extra brackets.

Compatibility checks before ordering

Verify that the 8-inch cubic footprint fits the available wall space and that the NEMA Type 1 rating meets the environmental requirements of the installation. Confirm that the screw-on cover closure method satisfies any local code or inspection criteria for the intended circuit. Ensure the carbon-steel construction and grey finish are acceptable for the project specifications and that the listed standards align with the authority having jurisdiction.

Questions about this item

What does the NEMA Type 1 rating on this enclosure limit it to?

The NEMA Type 1 rating means this carbon steel enclosure is intended for indoor use only, providing protection against contact with enclosed equipment and a degree of protection against falling dirt.

What mounting provisions does the 8-inch square box include?

The enclosure features pre-drilled mounting holes on the back for direct wall mounting using screws or bolts appropriate for the mounting surface.

How is the cover secured and what is the common installation mistake?

The solid cover uses captive screws that thread into the body; the frequent error is cross-threading or over-tightening these screws, which can damage the threads and compromise the IP30 seal.
