55mm Graduated Softener Filter

The Hoya 55mm Softener B is a glass filter that applies a graduated soft-focus effect, designed for portrait photographers who want smoother skin tones and a dreamlike atmosphere straight from the camera. Its 55mm thread fits a wide range of compatible lenses.

Installing the filter

Screw the filter onto the front thread of a 55mm lens until snug; the graduated design means the effect fades across the frame, so rotate the filter to position the transition where you want it. Over-tightening can bind the threads, and vignetting may appear on wider focal lengths.

Behaviour under sustained use

The optical glass construction resists heat buildup during long sessions under continuous lighting, keeping the softening effect consistent without exposure shift. The durable frame maintains thread alignment so the graduated transition stays where you set it.

Questions about this item

How can I verify the 55mm Softener B filter is producing the intended graduated soft focus effect after mounting it?

Check that highlights take on a dreamy glow with a smooth fade from the filtered area to the clear portion, skin tones appear softened without loss of overall sharpness, and exposure remains unchanged from unfiltered shots.

What is included with the 55mm Softener B Glass Filter and what must be purchased separately?

The filter itself is supplied; a compatible 55mm thread lens is required and any lens cap or protective pouch must be bought separately.

Which version of the Hoya Softener series should I choose for a graduated effect on a 55mm lens?

Select the Softener B model in 55mm thread size; it is the only variant in this listing that provides the graduated soft focus design.
