HP 17 laptop Intel Core 5 120U

This 17.3 inch laptop runs on an Intel Core 5 120U processor with 12 cores and 14 threads. It comes with 32GB of DDR4 memory and a 2TB SSD. The HD+ display shows 1600 x 900 resolution. Windows 11 Pro is installed for professional use.

Thermals and power in daily use

The Intel Graphics integrated GPU shares system memory and keeps power draw modest during office tasks. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth handle wireless connectivity without a discrete wireless card adding heat. The chassis measures 15.78 by 10.15 by 0.81 inches and weighs 4.6 pounds.

Behaviour under sustained load

The processor reaches up to 5.0GHz max turbo frequency across its 12 cores when workloads demand it. Integrated graphics performance scales with available DDR4 4266 bandwidth during long sessions. The non-touch HD+ panel maintains consistent output without the power cost of higher resolutions.

Questions about this item

How do I install the DDR4 4266 memory in this HP 17 laptop and what step do people often miss?

The laptop uses DDR4 4266 memory; the step people often miss is confirming the new modules run at 4266 MHz to match the installed speed, otherwise the system will downclock them.

What maintenance or replacement will the 2 TB SSD need later?

The 2 TB PCIe SSD has no moving parts, so it requires no mechanical maintenance; replacement is only needed if capacity runs out or a drive-health tool reports wear.

What limit appears first during sustained use with the Intel Core 5 120U processor?

The integrated Intel Graphics shares system memory and thermal budget with the 12-core CPU, so graphics-intensive workloads hit thermal throttling before the processor reaches its 5.0 GHz turbo ceiling.
