HP 454234-B21 450GB 15000RPM SAS Drive

This HP 454234-B21 is a 450GB 3.5-inch internal hard drive spinning at 15000RPM with a SAS 3Gb/s interface. It includes a Smart Carrier caddy for hot-swap installation and arrives with zero hours on the mechanism. The dual-port design supports enterprise storage arrays and compatible HP ProLiant servers.

Suits arrays needing dual-port 3.5-inch SAS drives

This drive fits administrators replacing a failed unit in a SAS backplane that accepts 3.5-inch hot-swap carriers. It is not for systems that lack a SAS controller or cannot supply a 3.5-inch hot-swap bay. It is also not for users who need a larger capacity than 450GB or a different rotational speed.

Deciding spec: SAS 3Gb/s dual-port interface

The SAS 3Gb/s dual-port interface is the single specification that determines compatibility. The host must provide a SAS connection and a 3.5-inch hot-swap bay that accepts the included Smart Carrier tray. Without that interface and bay type, the drive cannot be installed or used.

Questions about this item

Does the 450GB 15000RPM SAS drive require any periodic maintenance such as bearing lubrication or firmware updates?

No scheduled bearing lubrication is needed; firmware updates are supplied by HP and applied through the host controller when available.

What is the first limit reached when the 15000RPM SAS drive runs under sustained heavy load?

The 3Gb/s SAS interface bandwidth ceiling is reached before the mechanical media saturates during continuous sequential transfers.

How much heat and noise does the 3.5" 15000RPM SAS drive produce when operating all day in a server chassis?

Expect typical enterprise 15K RPM acoustics and heat output; the included Smart Carrier tray aids airflow in hot-swap bays.
