HP DVD-Writer SATA Internal

The HP 647950-001 is an internal 8x DVD±RW SuperMulti drive designed for desktop and workstation PCs. It reads and writes CD and DVD media including double-layer discs. A SATA interface provides the host connection. This unit suits users adding or replacing an optical drive in a compatible bay.

Compatibility and Limitations

Suits systems with an internal 5.25-inch bay and a free SATA port. Not for laptops or small-form-factor chassis lacking a full-size drive bay. Buyers who want Blu-ray read or write capability should look elsewhere. No USB or external enclosure is included.

Maximum DVD Write Speed 8x

The key specification is the 8x maximum DVD write speed. Combined with 24x CD write speed and double-layer support, this defines the drive's burning performance. Verify that the target system can supply SATA data and power connectors before purchase.

Questions about this item

Does the 8x DVD±RW SuperMulti Drive fit a standard internal 5.25-inch bay with a SATA interface?

The drive is an internal SATA optical unit, so it mounts in a standard 5.25-inch bay and connects to a SATA port on the motherboard.

What is the correct order for securing the drive and attaching the SATA cable so the tray does not bind?

Slide the drive into the bay, fasten the mounting screws on both sides, then plug the SATA data and power cables — tightening screws after cabling can misalign the tray.

When should the laser lens be cleaned or the drive replaced if write speeds drop below 24x CD or 8x DVD?

Clean the lens with approved media if burns become unreliable; replace the unit if errors persist after cleaning, as the laser diode degrades over time.
