HP 300 GB 10k RPM SAS drive

This HP 653955-001 is a 300GB 2.5-inch internal hard drive spinning at 10k RPM. It connects through a 6G dual-port SAS interface. The drive is supplied new and carries part numbers 652564-B21 and 666355-001.

Suits 2.5-inch SAS bays.

This drive fits servers or arrays with 2.5-inch SAS hot-plug bays and a compatible 6G controller. Builders whose chassis accepts only 3.5-inch drive carriers cannot install this unit without an adapter.

6G dual-port SAS interface decides fit

The single specification that determines compatibility is the 6G dual-port SAS connection. Your backplane or RAID controller must support this exact interface for the drive to function.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 2.5" SAS drive in a 3.5" bay and which step is often missed?

Mount the drive in a 2.5-to-3.5 adapter bracket, connect the SAS data and power cables, then enable the SAS controller in BIOS so the 6 Gbit/s link negotiates correctly.

What maintenance or replacement will the 300 GB 10k RPM SAS drive need later?

Plan to replace the drive after its rated service life; the mechanical 10k RPM spindle and SAS interface have no user-serviceable parts and SMART monitoring will signal wear.

What limit appears first during sustained writes on the 6 Gbit/s SAS interface?

The 6 Gbit/s SAS bus bandwidth becomes the bottleneck before the 10k RPM platters reach their maximum sustained transfer rate.
