HP Smart Array P840 RAID Controller

The HP Smart Array P840 is a 12Gb PCIe RAID controller with two SCSI ports and 4GB flash-backed write cache. It provides hardware RAID acceleration for direct-attached storage arrays in HP ProLiant servers. The module installs in a low-profile PCIe slot and manages multiple drive configurations.

Suited for storage expansion in compatible HP

This card suits administrators adding RAID capability to supported HP ProLiant platforms that accept the P840 form factor. It is not for systems lacking a compatible PCIe slot or the proprietary cabling required for the two 12Gb SCSI ports. Buyers needing different port counts or cache capacities should select another model.

Questions about this item

Will the 4GB FBWC module on the Smart Array P840 need a battery replacement over time?

The 4GB FBWC includes a flash-backed write cache that uses a capacitor instead of a battery, so no battery replacement is required.

What throughput ceiling appears first when the Smart Array P840 runs its two 12Gb links at full load?

The controller provides two ports each operating at 12Gb/s, so the combined interface bandwidth is the first limit reached under sustained heavy I/O.
