Internal half-height LTO Ultrium 2 tape drive

The HP DW085A is an internal half-height tape drive that uses LTO Ultrium 2 media. It connects via a SAS interface and provides a 64 MB buffer to sustain streaming operations. The drive writes up to 200 GB of native data or 400 GB compressed per cartridge.

Suited for SAS-equipped servers needing LTO-2

This drive fits servers and workstations that have a SAS host bus adapter and require LTO Ultrium 2 read and write capability. It is not suitable for systems that only offer SCSI, Fibre Channel or USB connectivity, nor for workflows that demand LTO-3 or later media formats.

400 GB compressed capacity per cartridge

Each LTO Ultrium 2 cartridge holds 400 GB when compression is enabled, with a native capacity of 200 GB. The compressed sustained transfer rate reaches 173 GB per hour, determining how quickly backups complete on this drive.

Questions about this item

Does the DW085A ship with any LTO Ultrium 2 cartridges or a SAS cable, or must I buy them separately?

The drive is supplied as the internal unit only; LTO Ultrium 2 data cartridges and a SAS cable are not included and must be purchased separately.

Should I choose the 200 GB native or the 400 GB compressed capacity figure when planning how many tapes to buy?

Plan on the 200 GB native capacity; the 400 GB compressed figure assumes 2:1 compression which varies with your data type and cannot be guaranteed.

What does the 173 GB/hr compressed transfer rate mean for a typical backup window on this SAS drive?

At the rated 173 GB/hr compressed rate a full 400 GB cartridge would take roughly 2.3 hours, though actual throughput depends on host performance and data compressibility.
