LTO-4 Ultrium 1760 tape drive

The HP EH920B#ABA is a new external LTO-4 Ultrium 1760 tape drive designed for backup and archival storage. It uses a 3Gb/s SAS interface and provides a native capacity of 819.20 GB with a compressed capacity of 1.6TB. A 128MB buffer supports sustained streaming during read and write operations.

Who this suits

Organisations needing LTO-4 read and write capability with backward read support for LTO-3 and LTO-2 cartridges will find this drive compatible. It also offers AES 256-bit hardware encryption for data security. Buyers who require higher native capacity or faster transfer rates should look at later LTO generations.

Deciding specification

The 3Gb/s SAS interface determines whether this drive can connect to your host bus adapter or server backplane. Verify that your system has a compatible SAS port before purchase.

Questions about this item

What does the 1.6 TB compressed capacity mean for a single cartridge in daily use?

One LTO-4 cartridge holds up to 1.6 TB of compressed data, reducing the number of tapes needed for a full backup set.

How does the 3 Gb/s SAS interface limit real-world throughput?

The 3 Gb/s SAS link caps the drive at its native 81.92 MB/s or compressed 163.84 MB/s sustained rates, well below the interface ceiling.

Will the 5.25 inch form factor fit a standard external enclosure or rack shelf?

The drive measures 9.2 x 6.0 x 10.9 inches and weighs 5.3 lbs, matching a typical 5.25 inch half-height bay or desktop enclosure.
