Target user

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0-inch business laptop built around an Intel Core i7-6500U dual-core processor with a 3.10 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 16GB DDR3 memory, a new 240GB SATA SSD and Windows 10 Home 64-bit, ready for immediate deployment.

Fit and limits

It suits professionals who need a reliable 1920 x 1080 non-touch display, integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 and a silver chassis for daily office applications. Buyers who want more storage, a dedicated graphics processor or a touchscreen should look at something else.

Deciding specification

The single specification that decides fit is the 240GB SSD capacity; it determines whether the available space matches the intended workload without requiring an immediate drive upgrade.

Questions about this item

How do I install more memory in the EliteBook 840 G3 and which step do people often miss?

The laptop has two DDR3 slots supporting up to 32 GB total. Remove the bottom cover, insert the module at an angle until the clips click, then replace the cover — many forget to seat the module fully before snapping the clips shut.

What maintenance or replacement will the 240 GB SATA SSD need later?

The 2.5-inch SATA SSD has no moving parts, so routine maintenance is not required. If capacity runs low or the drive reaches its write endurance, replace it with another 2.5-inch SATA SSD and reinstall Windows 10 Home 64-bit.

What limit appears first when the Core i7-6500U runs at 3.10 GHz turbo for a long period?

The dual-core processor will hit its thermal ceiling first. Sustained turbo clocks raise the package temperature until the firmware throttles the cores back toward the 2.50 GHz base frequency to stay within the cooling envelope.
