Business laptop for mobile professionals

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14-inch laptop built for professionals who need a reliable Windows 10 Pro machine on the move. Its dual-core Intel Core i5-6300U processor runs at 2.40 GHz with 3 MB of cache, providing enough throughput for office suites, web apps and light multitasking. The 14.0-inch non-touch Full HD display shows 1920 x 1080 resolution with LED backlighting.

Connectivity and included items

The box contains the laptop, a charger and the battery. A single USB 3.1 Type-C port joins two USB 3.0 ports, a full-size DisplayPort, VGA and Gigabit RJ-45 for wired networks. Wireless uses 802.11 b/g/n or better, and a SIM card reader is present for mobile broadband. The integrated 720p webcam supports video calls without extra hardware.

Memory, storage and graphics limits

16 GB of DDR4 system memory and a 1 TB SATA M.2 SSD give ample space for documents, spreadsheets and a large application library. Intel HD Graphics 520 uses shared system memory, so it handles desktop productivity and video playback but cannot drive modern 3D workloads or heavy creative suites. Buyers who need discrete GPU power or more than 16 GB of RAM should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

Will the 1 TB SATA SSD need to be replaced for more capacity later?

The 1 TB SATA SSD is the only internal drive; adding more storage later would require an external drive or replacing this SSD with a larger one.

What limits sustained performance first — the dual-core i5-6300U or the shared Intel HD Graphics 520 memory?

The dual-core i5-6300U with 3 MB cache reaches its thread limit before the shared Intel HD Graphics 520 memory becomes the bottleneck.

How loud and hot does the 14.0 inch chassis get when the i5-6300U runs at 2.40 GHz all day?

The 14.0 inch chassis uses a single fan; sustained 2.40 GHz loads raise keyboard-deck temperature and fan noise to an audible but office-tolerable level.
