HP EliteBook 840 G3 14-inch laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0-inch business laptop powered by an Intel Core i5-6300U dual-core processor running at 2.40 GHz with a 3.00 GHz turbo frequency. It comes with 8GB of DDR3 memory and a new 500GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD. The HD display offers a 1366 x 768 resolution driven by Intel HD Graphics 520. No operating system is included.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

This laptop suits buyers who need a compact 14-inch device with a fast NVMe boot drive and dual memory slots supporting up to 32 GB. It is not for buyers who need a touchscreen, a higher-resolution panel, discrete graphics or a pre-installed operating system.

Deciding specification: 500GB M.2 NVMe SSD

The 500GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD is the specification that decides fit. It provides solid-state speed in a compact form factor, but the fixed 500 GB capacity may limit users with large local media libraries or multiple virtual machines.

Questions about this item

Do I need to supply my own operating system for the EliteBook 840 G3?

Yes, the laptop ships with no operating system installed so you must provide and install Windows or another OS yourself.

Can I keep using my existing DDR3 SO-DIMM modules to reach the 32 GB maximum?

The system has two DDR3 slots and supports up to 32 GB total, so compatible DDR3 modules you already own can be added or swapped.

How can I verify the 500 GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD is detected after I install an OS?

Open the BIOS or the OS disk management tool; the drive should appear as a 500 GB NVMe device with the expected capacity.
