EliteBook 840 G3 14 laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0 inch business laptop built around an Intel Core i7-6600U dual-core processor running at 2.60 GHz with a 3.40 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 8GB of DDR3 memory and a new 240GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD. No operating system is installed, so the buyer must provide their own Windows or Linux licence. Intel HD Graphics 520 handles the 1366 x 768 HD non-touch display.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

This unit suits IT departments or developers who want a managed fleet device they can image with a standard corporate build. The 32 GB memory ceiling allows future RAM upgrades for heavier workloads. Buyers who need a touchscreen, a higher-resolution panel or a pre-installed operating system should look elsewhere. Anyone requiring discrete graphics for CAD or gaming will not find it here.

Deciding specification — the NVMe boot drive

The single specification that decides fit is the 240GB NVMe PCIe solid-state drive. It provides fast boot and application load times on the PCIe interface. If your workflow demands a larger system volume or a secondary data drive, the single M.2 slot and absent 2.5 inch bay mean you cannot expand storage internally without replacing the primary drive.

Questions about this item

How loud does the fan get when the i7-6600U runs at 3.40 GHz for hours?

The dual-core i7-6600U is a low-power mobile processor; under sustained load the fan spins up moderately but stays quieter than larger workstation models, and the silver chassis helps dissipate heat across the palm rest.

What must I supply to boot the laptop since it ships with no operating system?

You need a bootable USB drive with Windows or Linux installation media, plus a valid licence key if you choose Windows; the 240 GB M.2 NVMe SSD is blank and ready for the OS.

Can I keep using my existing DDR3 SODIMMs if I want to expand the 8 GB up to the 32 GB maximum?

Yes, the two memory slots accept standard DDR3 SODIMMs, so any compatible modules you already own can be added alongside the factory-installed 8 GB.
