14-inch business laptop for mobile professionals

This HP EliteBook 840 G3 combines a 14.0-inch IPS display with an Intel Core i5-6300U processor, 32GB DDR4 memory and a 512GB SATA SSD. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed. The dual-core Skylake CPU runs at 2.4GHz with 3MB cache. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 drives the 1366 x 768 panel.

Who should consider this and who should not

Buyers needing a lightweight 14-inch chassis with plenty of RAM for multitasking and legacy port selection including VGA, DisplayPort, RJ-45 and USB 3.1 Type C will find it suitable. Those who require a touchscreen, a dedicated GPU, higher display resolution or a newer wireless standard should look elsewhere.

Deciding specification: 32GB DDR4 memory

The 32GB DDR4 configuration is the key figure that determines fit. It supports heavy browser tabs, virtual machines and large spreadsheets without paging. If your workflow needs 64GB or soldered-only slots, this unit will not meet the requirement.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 32 GB DDR4 version or look for a smaller capacity?

The 32 GB DDR4 configuration handles multitasking and virtual machines comfortably; a smaller capacity would limit simultaneous workloads on this platform.

What does the 2.4 GHz Core i5-6300U deliver in daily use?

The dual‑core 2.4 GHz processor with 3 MB cache runs office suites, web apps and light development smoothly, while its 4 threads keep background tasks responsive.

How fast is the USB 3.1 Type C port in practice?

The USB 3.1 Type C port supports up to 10 Gbps signalling, so external SSDs and docks reach near‑full SATA SSD speed rather than being limited by the older USB 3.0 ports.
