Target buyer

This EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0 inch business laptop for professionals who need a reliable portable workstation without a pre-installed operating system. It suits IT departments or developers who prefer to load their own Windows or Linux image on clean hardware.

Deciding specification

The system ships with 16GB of DDR3 memory and a new 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe drive, while the processor is a dual-core Intel Core i7-6500U running at 2.50 GHz with a 3.10 GHz turbo frequency. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 drives the 1920 x 1080 non-touch FHD panel.

Installation and common issues

Because no operating system is included, the buyer must create bootable media and install drivers before the laptop becomes usable. Memory can be expanded to 32 GB across two slots if workloads demand more RAM, but the soldered CPU and integrated graphics cannot be upgraded later.

Questions about this item

How does the 2.50 GHz base clock and 3.10 GHz turbo on the Core i7-6500U behave under sustained load?

The dual-core processor runs at 2.50 GHz base and can reach 3.10 GHz turbo for short bursts; sustained speeds depend on the laptop's cooling solution and power limits.

What does the NVMe PCIe interface on the 1 TB M.2 drive cap at in this system?

The 1 TB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD operates over a PCIe lane configuration supported by the platform; real-world throughput is limited by the chipset's PCIe generation and lane count.

Will a second DDR3 module fit alongside the 16 GB already installed?

The board has two memory slots and supports up to 32 GB total, so a second DDR3 SO-DIMM can be added to reach the maximum capacity.
