HP EliteBook 840 G3 business laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0 inch business laptop with an Intel Core i7-6600U dual-core processor, 8GB DDR3 memory and a new 500GB SATA SSD. It ships without an operating system so the buyer installs their own. The HD display runs at 1366 x 768 resolution driven by Intel HD Graphics 520.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

This suits buyers who need a compact office machine ready for a clean OS install and who can work within 8GB of memory. It does not suit buyers who want more storage out of the box, builders who need a second drive bay, or users who require a touchscreen or higher-resolution panel.

The specification that decides fit

The 500GB 2.5 inch SATA SSD is the single specification that decides fit because it fixes both capacity and drive form factor; the laptop has no second drive bay so expansion requires replacing this drive.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 500GB SSD and what step is often missed?

The 2.5" SATA drive slides into the internal bay and connects to the motherboard; the step people miss is securing the retention screw so the drive does not shift.

What maintenance will the 8GB DDR3 memory need later?

The two slots support up to 32 GB total, so you can add a second module or replace both sticks when more capacity is required.

What limit appears first during sustained loads on the i7-6600U?

The dual-core 2.60 GHz processor reaches its thermal ceiling before the Intel HD Graphics 520 becomes the bottleneck.
