Business ultrabook identity

The HP EliteBook 840 G4 is a 14.0" business laptop powered by a dual-core Intel Core i5-7300U running at 2.6 GHz. It comes with 16 GB DDR4 memory and a 512 GB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD, running Windows 10 Pro out of the box.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

This unit suits mobile professionals who need a lightweight 14" chassis, a full-size DisplayPort and VGA output, plus Gigabit Ethernet for docked desk work. Buyers who want a touchscreen, a higher-resolution panel, or a discrete GPU should look elsewhere.

Deciding specification

The 1366 x 768 non-touch display is the single spec that decides fit: it keeps weight and cost low but limits on-screen workspace and media clarity compared to 1080p panels.

Questions about this item

What real-world throughput does the USB 3.1 Type C port cap at?

The USB 3.1 Type C port supports up to 10 Gbps, so large file transfers to an NVMe drive hit that ceiling in practice.

Which physical slot and keying does the 512 GB NVMe drive use?

It occupies an M.2 2280 slot with M-keying, the standard size for this 512 GB NVMe module.

How do you reinstall Windows 10 Pro cleanly, and where do people slip up?

Boot from a Windows 10 Pro USB, choose custom install on the 512 GB NVMe, then install the Intel HD Graphics 620 driver first; skipping that driver leaves the 1366 x 768 screen on basic VGA.
