Business laptop for mobile professionals

The HP EliteBook 840 G4 is a 14.0 inch business laptop built around a dual-core Intel Core i5-7300U processor running at 2.6 GHz with 3 MB L3 cache. It comes with 8 GB of DDR4 memory and a 1 TB M.2 SATA SSD for storage. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 drives the 1366 x 768 HD LED display. Windows 10 Home is pre-installed.

Suits office workers needing legacy ports.

This configuration suits professionals who rely on VGA, full-size DisplayPort, RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet and a USB 3.1 Type-C port for docks and external monitors. The SIM card reader supports mobile broadband on the go. Buyers who need a touchscreen, a higher-resolution panel or discrete graphics for creative workloads should look at other models.

1 TB M.2 SATA SSD decides storage speed and capacity

The single specification that determines fit is the 1 TB M.2 SATA solid-state drive. It provides a large capacity for documents and applications while operating on the SATA interface. If your workflow demands the higher sequential throughput of a different interface, this drive will not meet that requirement.

Questions about this item

How does the 2.6 GHz dual-core i5-7300U perform in everyday workloads?

The 2.6 GHz dual-core i5-7300U with 3 MB cache and four threads handles office applications, web browsing and light multitasking smoothly, while the 8 GB DDR4 memory keeps common business workloads responsive.

What does the USB 3.1 Type-C port actually support on this laptop?

The single USB 3.1 Type-C port runs at up to 10 Gbps for data and carries DisplayPort video, so it can drive an external monitor or dock while also connecting high-speed storage or peripherals.

Will a standard 2.5-inch drive fit alongside the existing 1 TB M.2 SATA SSD?

The 1 TB M.2 SATA SSD occupies the M.2 slot; the chassis also provides a 2.5-inch SATA bay, so you can add a second hard drive or SSD for extra capacity without removing the boot drive.
