Business laptop with quad-core i5

The HP EliteBook 840 G5 is a 14-inch business laptop built around an Intel Core i5-8350U quad-core processor running at 1.7 GHz with 6 MB L3 cache. It ships with 16 GB of DDR4 memory and a 1 TB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD. The 1920 x 1080 FHD non-touch display uses LED backlighting. Windows 10 Pro comes pre-installed for professional environments.

Ports and connectivity for docked workflows

One USB Type-C port with Thunderbolt 3 supports power delivery, external displays and high-speed peripherals through a single cable. Two USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports handle legacy accessories. Gigabit Ethernet and Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 provide wired and wireless network access. An HDMI output drives a second monitor. The integrated 720p webcam covers video calls without extra hardware.

Storage and memory headroom for office loads

The 1 TB NVMe SSD holds the operating system, applications and large project files with fast boot and load times. 16 GB of DDR4 keeps dozens of browser tabs, Office suites and collaboration tools responsive. Shared system memory feeds the Intel UHD Graphics 620, which handles 1080p video playback and light creative tasks. Heavy 3D rendering, modern gaming or multi-monitor 4K workloads exceed the integrated graphics capability.

Questions about this item

Does the 1.7 GHz Core i5-8350U throttle under long workloads?

The quad-core processor has a 6 MB L3 cache and runs at 1.7 GHz base frequency; thermal limits will reduce clocks during extended heavy use.

How loud and hot does the EliteBook 840 G5 get when running all day?

Integrated UHD 620 graphics share system memory so the single fan stays relatively quiet; the aluminium chassis spreads heat across the palm-rest area.

What cables or docks must I already own to use the Thunderbolt 3 port?

The single USB-C Thunderbolt 3 port accepts Thunderbolt 3 docks, USB-C monitors or USB-C power adapters you already have.
