Business laptop for mobile professionals

The HP EliteBook 840 G5 is a 14.0 inch laptop built for professionals who need reliable performance on the move. It runs on an Intel Core i5-8350U processor with four cores and eight threads, paired with 8GB of DDR4 memory and a 512GB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD. The 1920 x 1080 FHD display uses LED backlighting and is non-touch. Windows 10 Home comes pre-installed.

Sustained workload behaviour

The quad-core 1.70 GHz processor handles everyday business applications and multitasking without thermal throttling during extended sessions. Shared system memory supports the Intel UHD Graphics 620 for typical office visuals and video playback. The NVMe SSD keeps boot times and file access quick even after hours of continuous use. Fan noise remains low under typical office loads.

Build quality and daily connectivity

The silver chassis uses a sleek, sturdy construction designed for frequent travel. A single USB Type C Thunderbolt 3 port provides high-speed data and video output alongside two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports. Gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet and HDMI are built in for wired networks and external displays. An integrated webcam and Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 handle video calls and Wi-Fi.

Questions about this item

How much fan noise and heat does the Core i5-8350U produce during all-day workloads?

The quad-core 1.7 GHz chip has a low TDP so the laptop runs quietly; the 14-inch chassis keeps surface temperatures comfortable for extended sessions.

Which peripherals must I already own to use the USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3 port and the HDMI output?

You need a Thunderbolt 3 cable or dock for the USB-C port and a standard HDMI cable for the video output; both ports are ready to use.

Will the Intel UHD Graphics 620 drive my older 1080p monitor over HDMI without scaling issues?

Yes, the integrated GPU supports 1920 x 1080 over HDMI so the external display works at its native resolution.
