Business laptop for mobile professionals

The HP EliteBook 840 G5 pairs an Intel Core i7-8650U quad-core processor with 8 GB DDR4 memory and a 1 TB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD. A 14.0-inch 1920 x 1080 FHD LED display and Intel UHD Graphics 620 handle everyday productivity. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed. It suits office workers who need a compact, secure machine for travel and docked use.

Thermals and power in daily use

The 15 W CPU runs cool during typical document, web and video workloads. Fan noise stays low in quiet rooms. Integrated graphics share system memory, keeping power draw modest. The 1 TB NVMe drive has no moving parts, so heat and acoustic output remain minimal under normal multitasking.

Build, ports and everyday ergonomics

Silver chassis meets MIL-STD durability expectations for business travel. One USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3 port, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, HDMI and Gigabit RJ-45 cover docking and peripheral needs. Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 provides Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Webcam supports conferencing. Non-touch screen avoids fingerprint smudges. Grade B condition means visible cosmetic wear such as scratches or shiny keys; screen may show minor blemishes.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 1TB NVMe drive in the M.2 slot, and which step do people often miss?

Insert the drive at an angle into the M.2 socket, then press it flat and secure it with the single retention screw; the step most often missed is fastening that screw, which leaves the drive unseated.

What maintenance will the 8GB DDR4 memory and 1TB NVMe SSD need over time?

The DDR4 memory is soldered and requires no service; the NVMe SSD has no moving parts, so only keep firmware updated and monitor SMART health for wear.

At what point does the 15W Core i7-8650U hit its thermal limit during sustained loads?

The 15W TDP ceiling is reached first; once the CPU maintains its base 1.9GHz across all four cores, the cooling system caps further turbo boost to stay within that envelope.
