Business laptop for mobile professionals

The HP EliteBook 840 G5 is a 14 inch business laptop built around an Intel Core i5-8350U quad-core processor running at 1.7 GHz. It comes with 32 GB of DDR4 memory and a 256 GB NVMe PCIe solid-state drive. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed and the 14.0 inch LED panel shows 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution without touch input.

Suits single-device workers.

This configuration fits professionals who need one reliable machine for office applications, web browsing and video calls. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 uses shared system memory and drives the internal screen plus one external display through HDMI or the single Thunderbolt 3 port. Buyers who need discrete graphics performance, multiple external monitors or a touchscreen should look at other models.

Quad-core U-series CPU with 6 MB cache

The decisive specification is the Intel Core i5-8350U processor: four cores, eight threads, 1.7 GHz base frequency and 6 MB of L3 cache in a low-power envelope. That combination determines how the laptop handles multitasking and sustained workloads, so verify it matches the performance level your daily tasks require.

Questions about this item

How do I install the NVMe M.2 SSD in the EliteBook 840 G5, and which step is often missed?

Remove the bottom cover, insert the drive at an angle into the M.2 slot, press it flat, and secure it with the single screw; the step often missed is fastening that screw before reassembly.

What maintenance or replacement will the 32 GB DDR4 memory and 256 GB NVMe SSD need later?

The memory is soldered and not upgradeable, so no maintenance is required; the NVMe SSD can be replaced with another M.2 PCIe drive if capacity or speed becomes a limit.

What limit appears first under sustained load on the Core i5 8350U with UHD Graphics 620?

Thermal throttling on the 1.7 GHz quad-core processor typically arrives before the shared video memory or 256 GB SSD become bottlenecks during prolonged workloads.
