Business laptop for mobile professionals

The HP EliteBook 850 G2 is a 15.6 inch FHD laptop built around an Intel Core i5-5200U dual-core processor running at 2.20 GHz with a 2.70 GHz turbo frequency. It comes with 16 GB of DDR3 memory and a new 500 GB 2.5 inch SATA SSD. The system ships without an operating system so the buyer installs their preferred platform.

Silver chassis with standard business connectivity

The silver non-touch display offers a 1920 x 1080 resolution suited to office applications and video calls. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 5500 drives the panel and external outputs. Two memory slots are populated to the 16 GB maximum supported by the platform. The 2.5 inch SATA SSD bay allows straightforward storage maintenance or expansion.

Low-power CPU keeps thermals and noise modest

The 5th generation U-series processor has a low thermal design power that typically allows quiet operation during everyday workloads such as document editing, web browsing and video playback. Fan activity remains subdued under light load and ramps up only during sustained compute tasks. Power draw stays modest thanks to the efficient dual-core architecture and solid-state storage.

Questions about this item

Does the 2.5-inch SATA interface cap the 500GB SSD at SATA speeds?

The 500GB SSD uses a 2.5-inch SATA connection, so its maximum throughput is limited by the SATA interface rather than by the drive itself.

What physical slot does the 16GB DDR3 memory occupy, and is there room to add more?

The 16GB DDR3 fills both of the two available memory slots, and the system already reaches its 16GB maximum supported capacity.

How is the operating system installed on a laptop that ships without one, and what step is often missed?

You must create bootable installation media on another computer, boot the EliteBook 850 G2 from it, and then partition the 500GB SSD before the installer can write the OS files.
