HP EliteBook 850 G2 laptop

This 15.6-inch business laptop runs on an Intel Core i5-5300U processor with a 2.90 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 16GB DDR3 memory and a new 240GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD. The 1920 x 1080 FHD display is non-touch. No operating system is installed, so the buyer must provide one.

Build integration and expansion

The dual-core CPU and integrated Intel HD Graphics 5500 handle office workloads without a discrete GPU. Two memory slots exist but 16GB is the maximum supported capacity, so no RAM upgrade is possible. The M.2 NVMe drive occupies the primary storage slot; there is no 2.5-inch bay for an additional hard drive.

Sustained load behaviour

Under continuous use the U-series processor manages thermals within the slim chassis. The 240GB NVMe SSD maintains consistent read and write speeds during long file transfers. Buyers who need more storage or a dedicated graphics card for rendering should consider a larger workstation-class machine.

Questions about this item

Will the 2.90 GHz turbo frequency hold during long compile jobs on the i5-5300U?

The dual-core i5-5300U runs at a 2.30 GHz base with a 2.90 GHz turbo; sustained loads will settle at the base speed once thermal limits are reached.

How loud and hot does the EliteBook 850 G2 get when the Intel HD Graphics 5500 drives the 15.6" 1920x1080 panel all day?

Integrated Intel HD Graphics 5500 shares the CPU thermal budget, so fan noise and chassis temperature rise steadily during continuous 1080p workloads.

Do I need a separate Windows licence to use this laptop since it ships with no operating system?

Yes, the unit arrives without an OS, so you must supply and install your own Windows or Linux licence before first boot.
