Silver 3.5 inch hard drive mounted in black Smart Carrier tray

HP

HP MB4000JEQNL 4TB 7200RPM SAS 12Gbps 3.5in internal hard drive with Smart Carrier

SKU CH-861W-Y7DCZ

A 4TB 3.5in SAS drive spinning at 7200RPM with a 12Gbps interface and a supplied Smart Carrier tray

  • 4 TB capacity stores large datasets and backups
  • 7200 RPM spindle speed delivers fast sequential throughput
  • 12 Gbps SAS interface moves data quickly between server and drive
  • 512e sector format maintains compatibility with legacy operating systems
  • 5 inch form factor with Smart Carrier fits standard drive bays

HP 4TB SAS 12Gbps Midline Drive

This 4TB internal hard drive spins at 7200RPM and connects through a 3.5in SAS 12Gbps interface. It uses a 512e sector format and ships with an HP Smart Carrier tray. The drive is designed for server and storage arrays that require consistent throughput and hot-plug capability.

Upgrade from slower midline or nearline SAS drives

Replacing a lower-capacity or slower-rotational-speed SAS drive with this 4TB 7200RPM model increases raw capacity and sequential transfer rates. The jump is worth it when the existing array is bottlenecked by spindle speed or total space and the controller supports 12Gbps signalling.

Limited by SAS 12Gbps controller

The drive cannot exceed the 12Gbps link speed of the host controller or the aggregate bandwidth of the backplane. It also requires a system with 3.5in SAS hot-plug bays and compatible firmware; older 6Gbps-only backplanes will restrict performance to half the rated interface speed.

Questions about this item

Does the 3.5in SAS drive come with the Smart Carrier tray for HP server bays?

Yes, the MB4000JEQNL includes the Smart Carrier caddy so it slides directly into compatible HP 3.5in hot-swap bays without a separate tray purchase.

Which SAS backplane speed is required to install this 12Gbps drive?

The drive operates on a 12Gbps SAS backplane and will also negotiate down to 6Gbps or 3Gbps if the controller or expander only supports those speeds.

How often should the 7200RPM 4TB midline drive be checked for SMART reallocated sectors?

Run a SMART short test monthly and a long test quarterly; replace the drive once reallocated sector count or pending sector count begins to rise above zero.
