Server identity

The HP ProLiant DL380 G9 is a 2U rack server built for data-centre workloads that demand dual-processor compute density. It ships with two Xeon E5-2643v3 six-core CPUs running at 3.4GHz and 128GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory across 24 DIMM slots. The Intel C610 chipset supports up to 36 total cores when populated with compatible v3 or v4 processors.

Storage controller impact

A Smart Array P440 with 4GB flash-backed write cache drives the 16 SFF drive bays at 12Gb or 6Gb SAS speeds. The controller enables RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 without installing any drives, so you choose capacity and redundancy independently. Redundant hot-swap 500W power supplies keep the array online during a module failure.

Pre-order checklist

Verify that your rack provides 2U of vertical space and adequate airflow for a 16-bay SFF chassis. Confirm the facility can deliver redundant power circuits to both 500W supplies. Ensure you have 2.5-inch SAS drives or SSDs ready, because no media is included, and plan for an operating system licence since none is supplied.

Questions about this item

Which memory modules can I add later to reach the 128GB limit?

The server has 24 DDR4 DIMM slots supporting 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB ECC Registered modules up to 2400MT/s; actual speed depends on the installed Xeon E5-2643v3 processors.

What storage throughput ceiling will I hit first with the P440 controller?

The Smart Array P440 with 4GB FBWC handles 12Gb/s SAS links, so the controller bandwidth is the first limit before the 16 SFF drive bays are saturated.

How loud and hot does the 2U chassis get with both 500W supplies running continuously?

Dual redundant 500W hot-swap power supplies share the load, keeping fan speeds lower than single-supply operation; exact acoustic and thermal figures depend on the installed drive configuration.
