Rack server with Xeon E5-2643 v3

The HP ProLiant DL380 G9 is a 2U rack server built around a single Intel Xeon E5-2643 v3 six-core processor running at 3.4 GHz. It ships with 8 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory across 24 DIMM slots and includes two 1 TB 7.2K SAS drives managed by a Smart HBA H240ar controller. Dual 500 W redundant hot-swap power supplies support continuous operation in data-centre racks.

Sustained load behaviour

Under steady workloads the six cores maintain their 3.4 GHz base frequency without the thermal throttling that can affect burst-only benchmarks. The H240ar controller delivers consistent 12 Gbps SAS and 6 Gbps SATA throughput across RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 volumes. DDR4 memory runs up to 2400 MT/s, limited by the installed processor capability, while redundant power supplies share load to prevent interruption during extended runs.

Interface practical limits

The 12 Gbps SAS backplane caps drive bandwidth well below the controller's theoretical maximum when all 12 LFF bays are populated. DDR4 slots top out at 2400 MT/s even if faster modules are fitted, because the processor memory controller sets the ceiling. Expansion beyond the single CPU leaves half the DIMM slots and the second processor socket unused, limiting total memory to 3 TB and core count to 36 only when a second processor is added.

Questions about this item

How much power do the two 500W redundant supplies draw when the DL380 G9 runs all day?

Each supply is rated at 500W; actual draw depends on the workload placed on the six-core 3.4 GHz Xeon and the two 1 TB SAS drives.

What memory modules must I already have to expand the 8 GB installed in this server?

You need DDR4 ECC registered DIMMs — 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB — up to 2400 MT/s, filling the 24 slots across both processor sockets.

Will my existing 6 Gbps SATA drives work with the Smart HBA H240ar controller in this unit?

Yes, the H240ar supports 6 Gbps SATA alongside 12 Gbps SAS, so older SATA drives can be used in the 12 LFF bays.
