A 2U rack server with 16 drive bays, a 12-core Xeon at 2.3GHz, 128GB DDR4, two 146GB SAS drives and a P440 RAID controller with 4GB flash-backed cache
The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 fits two full-height processors and twenty-four DDR4 DIMM slots in a 2U chassis with sixteen 2.5-inch SAS bays. A single E5-2670 v3 twelve-core processor at 2.3GHz and 128GB of registered ECC memory are installed. Dual 500W hot-swap supplies and a Smart Array P440 with 4GB flash-backed cache handle RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Two 146GB 15K SAS drives ship in the front bays.
The sixteen-bay front panel and twenty-four memory slots support heavy consolidation workloads. Buyers who require a second processor to reach the thirty-six-core maximum or who need more than 128GB of memory today must add parts. The single-socket configuration leaves half the DIMM slots and the second CPU socket empty. Organisations that need GPU acceleration or more than sixteen internal drives should consider a different platform.
The chassis provides sixteen small-form-factor SAS drive bays backed by a Smart Array P440 controller with 4GB flash-backed write cache. This combination determines how many drives you can install internally and which RAID levels are available without an additional controller.

Other versions of this model
The server occupies 2U of rack space and provides 16 small-form-factor 2.5-inch SAS drive bays.
The P440 plugs into a PCIe slot; the 4GB FBWC module must be seated on the controller before the server is powered on or the cache will not initialise.
DDR4 ECC RDIMMs typically run for years; replace a DIMM only if the system logs a correctable-error threshold. The 15K 146GB SAS drives should be swapped when SMART predicts failure or a rebuild takes too long.
