24-bay 2U rack server for dense storage workloads

This HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 fits 24 small-form-factor drives in a 2U chassis. A single Xeon E5-2643 v3 running at 3.4 GHz provides six cores and 12 threads. The board accepts a second processor and up to 3 TB of DDR4 across 24 DIMM slots. It targets environments that need maximum drive count per rack unit.

P440 controller with 4 GB FBWC enables full RAID

The Smart Array P440 brings 4 GB of flash-backed write cache and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Two 500 W redundant hot-swap power supplies keep the array online during a module failure. No drives or operating system are included, so the buyer chooses media and software.

Tool-less rails and hot-swap bays simplify

Drive trays with screws are supplied for all 24 front bays, and the rear cage option adds two more slots. Memory population rules require matching DIMMs per processor, so plan capacity before installing. The embedded Matrox G200 graphics only supports basic console output.

Questions about this item

Will the Smart Array P440 4GB FBWC controller need a battery or capacitor replacement down the line?

The P440 uses 4GB flash-backed write cache; the capacitor module that protects cache during power loss is a field-replaceable unit and should be swapped when its health status degrades.

With a single E5-2643 v3 at 3.4GHz, what resource saturates first under a sustained all-core load?

The six-core processor runs at a fixed 3.4GHz; under continuous heavy compute the CPU thermal envelope is reached before memory bandwidth or the 12Gb SAS backplane become bottlenecks.

How loud and hot does the 2U chassis get when both 500W redundant supplies run 24/7?

Dual 500W hot-swap supplies share the load; fan speed ramps with inlet temperature, so a typical data-centre aisle keeps noise at conversational levels and exhaust air warm but within spec.
