Built for dense compute

The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is a 2U rack server equipped with a single Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 twelve-core processor running at 2.3GHz. It ships with 64GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory across 24 DIMM slots and two 600GB 15K SAS drives managed by an H240ar controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. This configuration suits virtualisation hosts, database nodes or high-density web tiers that need strong single-thread performance and fast local storage in a compact chassis.

Dual 500W hot-swap supplies share load

Redundant power supplies operate in parallel, so a single unit failure does not interrupt service and the modules can be replaced without tools while the server runs. The 2U form factor uses HP's standard cooling design to move air front-to-back across the CPU, memory and drive bays, keeping thermals stable under sustained multi-core workloads. Acoustic output is typical for rack-mounted enterprise gear and intended for server-room deployment rather than office desks.

Eight SFF bays with flexible expansion

The front panel provides eight 2.5-inch SAS/SATA bays; two are populated with the supplied 600GB drives and trays. Optional kits can add a universal media bay, up to six NVMe drives or a second eight-bay cage, raising total capacity to 24 SFF drives. The H240ar controller uses a 12Gb SAS internal interface with 6Gb SATA support, and the board includes a Matrox G200eH2 graphics core for basic console output. No operating system is included.

Questions about this item

How do I install the two 600 GB SAS drives into the 8 SFF bays, and which step is often missed?

Slide each 2.5" drive into its tray until the latch clicks, insert the tray into any of the eight front bays until the lever locks, then use the Smart Storage Administrator to create a logical volume — the array will not appear to the OS until that step is done.

What maintenance or replacement will the DDR4 memory need later?

The 64 GB kit fills some of the 24 DIMM slots with ECC registered modules running up to 2400 MT/s; if capacity must grow, add matching DDR4 RDIMMs in sets per processor — no scheduled replacement is required unless a module fails.

What limit appears first when the E5-2670 v3 runs at full load continuously?

The single 12-core 2.3 GHz processor hits its thermal ceiling before the dual 500 W redundant supplies or the H240ar 12 Gb SAS controller saturate, so sustained compute throughput is bound by CPU cooling capacity.
