Server purpose

The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is a 2U rack server built for virtualisation hosts and database workloads that need up to 36 total cores across two sockets. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 twelve-core processor running at 2.3 GHz and 96 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. The B140i controller provides software RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 for SATA drives only.

Installation notes

The chassis uses eight 2.5-inch SFF drive bays with hot-swap trays included for the two installed 500 GB 7.2K SATA drives. Redundant 500 W hot-swap power supplies slide in from the rear without tools. Memory population follows a 12-slots-per-processor rule, so adding a second CPU unlocks the remaining 12 DIMM slots. The B140i does not support SAS or NVMe devices, so only SATA media can be used in the standard bays.

Deciding specification

Maximum memory capacity is 96 GB with the single processor installed; reaching the 3 TB platform limit requires the second CPU and 64 GB DIMMs. Buyers who need more than 96 GB of RAM or hardware RAID with SAS support should choose a different configuration.

Questions about this item

How can I confirm the E5-2670 v3 twelve-core CPU and 96GB DDR4 memory are detected correctly after powering on the 2U rack server?

During POST the system BIOS will display the single Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 processor with 12 cores at 2.3GHz and show 96GB of DDR4 ECC Registered memory across the 24 DIMM slots. The iLO management interface also reports processor and memory health status once the network is configured.

Which drives, trays and power supplies are included, and what must be purchased separately for the 8 SFF bay chassis?

The unit ships with two HP 500GB 7.2K 6Gbps 2.5-inch Enterprise SATA drives in drive trays, the B140i Software RAID controller supporting RAID 0/1/5/10, and two 500W redundant hot-swap power supplies. No operating system, media drives, GPU, additional drive trays, universal media bay, NVMe options or extra SFF bay kits are included.

Should I choose the single E5-2670 v3 configuration or add a second processor to reach the 36-core maximum?

The server supports up to two processors for a maximum of 36 total cores. Adding a second compatible Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 CPU doubles the core count and enables the second set of 12 DIMM slots for memory expansion beyond the installed 96GB. The current single-CPU configuration uses 12 of the 24 available memory slots.
