An Ultra320 SCSI RAID controller with PCI-X host interface, four VHDCI ports, and RAID ADG support
The HPE 6402/128 is a plug-in PCI-X array controller built for HP ProLiant servers. It delivers Ultra320 SCSI connectivity with hardware RAID for internal and external storage arrays. Administrators managing legacy server infrastructure use it to add four independent SCSI channels. The card fits a standard low-profile slot in supported chassis.
As a passive add-in card, the 6402/128 draws power from the PCI-X bus and relies on server chassis airflow for cooling. No onboard fan is present, so acoustic output is limited to the system fans already moving air across the slot. Typical power draw remains within the PCI-X specification for a controller of this class. Stable operation depends on adequate case ventilation.
The controller supports RAID levels 0, 1, 10, 5 and Advanced Data Guarding (ADG) for dual-parity protection. Two internal and two external VHDCI connectors provide a maximum transfer rate of 320 MB/s per channel. Battery-backed write cache uses a DDR architecture to preserve data during power loss. This combination of port count and RAID ADG decides whether the card matches the storage resilience plan.

Insert the 12.3 inch plug-in card into a PCI-X slot, then attach both internal and external VHDCI cables; the step often missed is connecting the battery-backed write cache module before powering on.
The DDR battery-backed write cache uses a replaceable battery module that should be swapped when the controller logs a cache battery low warning.
The 320 MB/s Ultra320 SCSI bus saturates before the dual-channel RAID engine reaches its throughput ceiling.
