  • 512e sector format ensures broad compatibility

Capacity and interface

The HPE 861590-B21 is an 8 TB internal hard drive with a 3.5 inch form factor and a SAS interface operating at 12Gb/s. It spins at 7200 rpm and uses 512e sector formatting for server storage arrays.

Server builders and array expanders

This drive suits administrators adding midline capacity to SAS-connected servers or external enclosures that accept large-form-factor 7.2K spindles. It is not for systems that lack a SAS backplane or controller, nor for platforms requiring 2.5 inch small-form-factor bays.

12Gb/s SAS connectivity

The single specification that decides fitment is the 12Gb/s SAS interface; the host must provide a compatible SAS port and cables to recognise and run the drive at its rated link speed.

Questions about this item

How long will the 7200 rpm spindle sustain write throughput before hitting its thermal limit?

The 7200 rpm Midline drive is rated for continuous operation in server environments, so sustained writes run at full spindle speed within the chassis cooling design.

What noise and heat should I expect from the 3.5" SAS drive running all day in a rack?

The 7200 rpm LFF drive produces typical enterprise acoustic levels and relies on server front-to-back airflow to keep temperatures within the Midline specification.

Which controller do I need so the 12Gb/s SAS interface negotiates at full speed?

A SAS controller or RAID card that supports 12Gb/s SAS is required; the drive uses a standard SAS connector and 512e sector format for broad server compatibility.
