  • 12Gb/s SAS interface enables high-throughput transfers
  • 5 inch form factor fits dense server bays
  • 512e disk format improves storage efficiency

Capacity and interface

This HPE 870798-001 is a 900 GB internal hard drive with a 12Gb/s SAS interface and a 2.5 inch form factor. It is built for servers and storage arrays that require high-speed enterprise storage.

Thermals noise and power

The 15000 rpm spindle speed delivers fast data access for demanding workloads. The drive includes a carrier for secure mounting in compatible bays. Acoustic output and power consumption vary with workload intensity.

512e disk format

The drive uses a 512e disk format which emulates 512 byte sectors on the physical media. Systems or controllers that require native 512 byte or 4Kn sector addressing may not support this drive.

Questions about this item

How is the 2.5" SAS drive with carrier installed in a server bay, and what step is often missed?

Slide the carrier into the hot-swap bay until the latch clicks, then secure the retention screw; the step often missed is tightening that screw, which keeps the 12Gb/s SAS connection firm under vibration.

What maintenance or replacement will the 900 GB 15000 rpm drive need later?

Plan to replace the drive after its rated service life or if SMART attributes report reallocated sectors; no field-serviceable parts exist inside the sealed helium enclosure.

What limit appears first on the 12Gb/s SAS interface during sustained write workloads?

The 15000 rpm spindle caps sequential throughput around the drive’s native media rate, so the SAS 12Gb/s link headroom remains unused once the platters saturate.
